This is a curated list of best WordPress plugins, many of which we use all the time, and a few of which we’re currently experimenting — or that seem worth mentioning and tracking.

We’ll be tweaking this page over time, adding comments helpful recommendations.

  • Jetpack by WordPress.com

    Social sharing, email subscriptions, stats, spell-check, URL-shortener, Twitter feed widget, easy video embeds, and more.

  • Search Light

  • Hyper Cache

  • Page Links To

    allows you to make a WordPress page or post link to a URL of your choosing, instead of its WordPress page or post URL

  • Redirection

    Manage 301 redirections, keep track of 404 errors, and generally tidy up any loose ends your site may have. This is particularly useful if you are migrating pages from an old website, or are changing the directory of your WordPress installation.

  • Disable Trackbacks

    “Globally disables trackbacks to cut down on spam. Very, very few people legitimately use trackbacks and spammers love them, so it’s worthy tradeoff.”

To Create a Private, Login-Protected Site

  • Absolute Privacy

    New user moderation, site lock-down or members area, users can choose their own password and must enter their name when registering.

  • Custom Login

    Activate this plugin and customize your WordPress login screen. Use the built-in and easy to use settings page to do the work for you.

  • User Access Manager

    manage the access to your posts, pages and files. You only create a user group, put registered users to this and set up the rights for this group. From now on the post/page is only accessible and writable for the specified group. This plugin is useful if you need a member area or a private section at your blog or you want that other people can write at your blog but not everywhere.

  • Always Edit In HTML

    Provides a check box to set a given page or post as editable only in HTML view, to protect HTML code (such as Google Map embeds) from being garbled by the Rich Text Editor.

  • HTML Editor Reloaded

    Adds custom buttons to the HTML editor toolbar, a fullscreen mode, and full tabbing functionality.

  • Easy WP

    Easy WP turns WordPress into a super-simple cms. It lists all pages and can tap into the wordpress.com stats-plugin, for easy access to statistics. (Currently in Dutch. Other languages coming soon!)

    Displays your upcoming posts in a sidebar widget to tease your readers

  • Paypal Donations

    by Art Storm — Add your PayPal donations button via a shortcode or a sidebar widget. Very handy. Well reviewed.

  • The Events Calendar

    enables you to rapidly create and manage events using the post editor. Features include Google Maps integration as well as default templates such as a calendar grid and event list for streamlined one click installation.

  • User Photo

    allows users to add a profile thumbnail

  • Square Thumbnails for User Photo

    allows the generation of square thumbnails. (Requires the User Photo plugin, WILL NOT WORK otherwise.)

  • Yet Another Featured Post Plugin

    provides an easy AJAX interface to feature posts, with thumbnails & other display options for featured posts

  • Widget Logic

    lets you control on which pages widgets appear. It uses any of WP’s conditional tags. It also adds a ‘widget_content’ filter

  • Query Posts

    widget gives you unlimited control over showing posts and pages: list posts by category, tag, custom taxonomies, author, date, time, name, or anything you can imagine. You can choose to show the full content, excerpts, or even a simple list

  • UTF-8 Database Converter

    Converts Latin-character-set database to UTF-8. (No longer maintained by author, but marked as working as of last check.)

  • AJAXed WordPress

    A highly customizable plugin to add AJAX to your blog. AWP uses AJAX to load posts inline, paginate posts, load and submit comments, and more.

  • Google XML Sitemaps

    generates a special XML sitemap which will help search engines to better index your blog

  • wp-Typography

    improves your web typography with: hyphenation, space control, intelligent character replacement, and CSS hooks

  • Table of Contents Plus

    Creates a very nice wikipedia-style table of contents. Add this to your stylesheet to float right: #toc_container { float: right; }
